Occupational Safety Card training updated: What changed and why?

In 2023, Occupational Safety Card training underwent significant updates that came into effect on 1 April 2023. These changes aim to improve the effectiveness of the training and its suitability for the needs of modern working life.

The Occupational Safety Card celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023. Over two decades, the Occupational Safety Card has become a success. To date, more than 2.5 million Occupational Safety Cards have been issued in total.

Training duration shortened

Previously, Occupational Safety Card training lasted eight hours—including the exam—but with the update, the duration was shortened by half an hour. This change was made based on feedback from workplaces and course instructors, and its purpose is to make the training a more concise information package.

New learning objectives

With the update, the learning objectives have also been refined. The new learning objectives focus specifically on the following areas.

1. Principles of occupational health and safety at a shared workplace: The training covers the rights and obligations of occupational health and safety actors at a shared workplace, cooperation in occupational safety, and the rights and obligations of both the employer and the employee.
2. Identifying workplace hazards and strain factors: Participants learn to identify and assess workplace hazards and strain factors and understand the significance of the most common and significant hazards.
3. Principles of safe and healthy working: The training emphasizes the zero-accident principle, prevention and anticipation, and the creation of a safe and healthy working environment.
4. The impact of human factors on occupational safety: Participants learn to understand the significance of an individual’s own actions and human factors on occupational safety, as well as safe working methods and equipment.

Training formats

The updated Occupational Safety Card training can be completed in several ways:
• Traditional classroom instruction: Face-to-face teaching that enables discussion and networking.
• Remote learning: A webinar attended via your own device. This provides a calm and safe learning environment.
• Blended learning: A combination where part of the studies are completed as independent online learning.

New shorter refresher course option

With the update, a shorter, four-hour refresher course option was also reintroduced. A valid Occupational Safety Card can therefore be renewed with a four-hour refresher course and an exam. The total duration of the refresher training is 4.5 hours. This change makes renewing the card more flexible and less time-consuming. However, it is important to note that the refresher course must be completed while the card is still valid to be eligible for the shorter training. If the Occupational Safety Card has already expired, the full-day 7.5-hour training must be completed in its entirety.
